Service: Lightning Protection Risk Assessment Including Report
Description
The Lightning Protection Risk Assessment (LPRA) is the first step to determine which lightning protection measures are required for a structure or asset. It involves calculating the statistical likelihood of damage or loss caused by lightning strikes and comparing it with tolerable risk values.
This service can be provided in two modes:
-
Default Assessment – Using general data and typical structure parameters to provide a preliminary overview of required lightning protection measures. Ideal for early planning or budget estimation.
-
Per-Site Assessment – A detailed analysis based on actual site-specific data, including building dimensions, incoming conductive services, and local environmental factors, providing precise recommendations for lightning protection levels (LPL) and surge protection.
The outcome is a report showing calculated risks and suggested measures to reduce them to acceptable levels.
Basis / Standards
The assessment is carried out in accordance with:
-
IEC 62305-2:2024 – Edition 3 – Protection against Lightning
-
BS EN IEC 62305-2:2024 – Edition 3 – Protection against Lightning
Note: Unless specified otherwise, the latest applicable standard in the client’s country will be used. Alternative standards/versions must be defined before the assessment order is confirmed.
Required Information (from Client)
For Default Assessment:
-
Geographic location of the project.
-
Approximate dimensions of the site or structure.
-
Intended use or function of the building.
For Per-Site Assessment:
-
Detailed site layout and CAD drawings (2D: .dxf, .dwg, .pdf; 3D: .dwg, .ifc, .nwd).
-
List of incoming conductive services and distribution boards.
-
Structural data (materials, height, roof type).
-
Environmental data relevant to lightning risk (e.g., soil resistivity if available).
-
Any existing lightning protection systems or historical data.
Outcomes / Deliverables
Clients will receive:
-
A detailed report (.pdf) showing calculated lightning risk.
-
Recommended Lightning Protection Level (LPL) and Surge Protection measures.
-
Comparison of unprotected vs. protected risk scenarios.
-
For per-site assessments: precise, site-specific recommendations and risk mitigation measures.
-
Optional illustrations, diagrams, and charts to aid understanding of the protection strategy.
