Service: Lightning & Earth Protection System Design incl. Drawings & BOM

Description

This service provides a comprehensive design of a lightning protection system and safety earthing system for a structure or facility. The system is designed according to the applicable standards and specified lightning protection class, ensuring safety for people, equipment, and assets.

Key elements include:

  • Placement of air-termination systems, down-conductors, and earthing points.

  • Earthing system layout to safely dissipate fault currents and lightning strikes.

  • Separation distance calculation and optimization of component placement.

  • Generation of CAD drawings, 3D models, and a bill of materials (BOM) for implementation.

  • Design incorporates site-specific factors, including soil resistivity, environmental conditions, and building geometry.

  • Design of isolated lightning protection systems, ensuring electrical separation where required.

  • Special consideration for facilities in explosive atmospheres (ATEX / hazardous areas) to prevent ignition risks.

Note: If the lightning protection class is unknown, it can be determined via a Lightning Protection Risk Assessment (STR17201).

Basis / Standards

  • IEC 62305-3:2024 – Edition 3 – Protection against Lightning

  • BS EN IEC 62305-3:2024 – Edition 3 – Protection against Lightning

  • DESER – Design & Safety for Earthing Requirements

  • COMA – Code of Mitigation against Atmospheric discharges

Note: The latest applicable standard in the client’s country will be followed unless otherwise specified.

Required Information (from Client)

  • Lightning protection class (if already determined).

  • Geographic location of the project.

  • Dimensions and CAD drawings of structures (2D: .dxf, .dwg, .pdf; 3D: .dwg, .ifc, .nwd).

  • Electrical line diagrams (if applicable).

  • Hazardous area drawings (if relevant).

  • Optional: Soil resistivity data, results from site inspections, or existing earthing information.

Outcomes / Deliverables

Clients will receive:

  • 3D design of the external lightning protection and earthing system.

  • CAD drawings of the system layout, components, and earthing grid.

  • Bill of Materials (BOM) including all necessary components.

  • Written description of design rationale, installation considerations, and framework conditions.

  • Electronic delivery of all documents in .pdf format (other formats available on request).
